On the Level is structured as an entreaty from a father for his son to make. When he looks in the mirror and sees more of his old man in him, we know he’s not just talking about the lines on his face. For newcomers to Mac, I recommend checking out "One Another", "Still Beating", "For the First Time", and "Moonlight on the River" with the closing track "Watching Him Fade Away". Mac DeMarco’s new album This Old Dog was released on May 5th via Captured Tracks. Regret nags at DeMarco, especially over his prickly relationship with his father. Mac Demarco’s third studio album may be more of the familiar indie rock cross jangle pop we’ve come to expect from him, but somehow that classic formula still manages to impress on This Old Dog.
DeMarco has a very carefree personality and is a vibrant live performer, but when you stop and listen to the lyrics they reflect a darker image. He never had a positive relationship with his father and the song expresses fears he has of seeing more of his father in himself. Mac sings about a fear of aging, a theme he explores further on the album. For all of Mac's goofy and downright crazy tendencies, at the center lies a fine songwriter with a knack for writing reflective tunes, and This Old Dog stands as his most consistent and musically deep album. This Old Dog begins with the gently rollicking guitar of My Old Man. While taking the laid-back vibes of Salad Days forward, he strips down to the acoustic guitar for much of this album with great success, while also including some of the keyboard hooks ("For the First Time", "One More Love Song") that 2015's Another One helped propel him to stardom in the indie rock community.
